If a network admin configures a section as a ‘sub-community’, this creates a separate, protected and exclusive area in the network. This area can only be viewed by users who are members of at least one group in this sub-community. This sub-community is then only visible to members within the section.
Creating a sub-community #
New sections can be created, and existing sections edited, via Network administration > Sections and groups. Sections are set to the status ‘Open’ by default. This means that the section headline is displayed to every user on the left in the context bar. The status of individual groups within the section is not affected and can be defined in the respective administration under ‘Joining groups’.
If the status ‘Hidden (sub-community)’ is selected, only users who have a membership in at least one group within the section have the section headline displayed in their context bar on the left. The section remains hidden for all other users.
Configuring a sub-community #
Sub-communities offer a variety of setting options which are explained below.
Deactivate main group #
A main group is defined for each sub-community, which initially has the same name as the section. All members from the various groups within the sub-community are automatically members of this main group and can therefore be reached from one central location. This group can be hidden using the checkbox ‘Deactivate main group’.
Remove users from the main group of a section if the user isn’t a member of any group within this section #
The main group of a sub-community bundles all users who are members of different groups within this sub-community. If this setting is selected, users are automatically removed from the main group as well as soon as they are no longer a member of any other group in the section.
Restrict group invitation to members of the same section #
If this setting is selected, only users who are already members of a group within the sub-community can be invited to other groups within the sub-community. This means that users who are not members of any group in this section cannot be invited to a group in the sub-community.
Hide group memberships #
By selecting this setting, membership in groups within a sub-community is not shown in the user profile.
Activate design manager for section #
Requirements: tixxt Business, tixxt Enterprise, tixxtCloud Business, IndividualCloud Enterprise, IndividualCloud Maxx
You can set your own banners and logos for sub-communities and adjust the colour of the context bar – regardless of the prevailing network design.
Once a section has been defined as a sub-community in the network administration under Sections and Groups, you must tick the last checkbox ‘Activate design manager for section’ in order to be able to use the design manager for this sub-community.
Section admin #
If a sub-community has been created by a network admin, this admin is also the first admin of the sub-community. They can then appoint further section admins under ‘Section members’.
Section administration #
After reloading, each section admin will find the menu item ‘Manage section’ in the dropdown at the top right of the profile picture. This leads to the section administration.
Note: The name of the respective sub-community is displayed here. The word ‘Section’ serves as a placeholder here.
The administration options can then be found in the context bar on the left:
- Section settings
- Design manager
- Section members
- Group management
Section settings #
In the section settings, the sub-community admin can decide whether the group admins should also be allowed to create their own group designs or whether a single design should be used for all groups in the sub-community.
If the design of the groups within the sub-community should be allowed to be different from the section or network design, the checkbox ‘Activate design manager for groups’ must be selected. This allows the individual group admins to define their own designs for their groups.
To set your own design for a group in the sub-community, the design manager must be called up in the relevant group administration. This offers the same configuration options as the design manager at the section level.
Design Manager #
To adjust the design of a sub-community, you must first select ‘Design manager’ in the context bar of the section administration. Here, you can change the design of the sub-community, regardless of the prevailing design of the platform, provided there is an active network design. The design manager for sub-communities offers a simplified version of the design manager for the network level. The following design options are available for the sub-community:
- Header
- Context bar and context menus
Section members #
Via the menu item ‘Section members’, the sub-community admin can access an overview of all members of the sub-community.
The following options are available:
- Search by user (1)
- Invite Users (only available when active in the network administration)
- Via the context menu:
- Edit group memberships (2)
- Grant / revoke section admin privileges (3)
- Remove member from section (4)
By clicking on “Edit group memberships”, the section admin will be taken to a menu where they can manage the group memberships of the selected user within the sub-community. Similar to network administration, the user can be added to or removed from groups, and group admin status can be granted or revoked.
The admin status of users is highlighted accordingly. Possible statuses are section admin, network admin, or network admin & section admin. (5)
Group management #
Via the menu item ‘Group management’, the sub-community admin can access a list of all groups within the sub-community.
At the top is a search bar that allows you to search for groups in the respective sub-community.
By default, this searches for group names. By clicking on the ‘filter’ icon on the right next to the search bar, you can expand the search to search group profiles as well as group names.
Archived groups can also be viewed here. By setting the filter ‘Search archive’, only groups in the sub-community that have been archived in the past are displayed.
In the list of groups below, you can view the most important information such as the number of members, admins and posts under the group name.
Via the buttons on the right, a sub-community admin has the possibility to delete a group. Clicking on ‘Delete group’ triggers a confirmation prompt. Only when this is confirmed is the group permanently deleted. A deleted group cannot be restored.
The main group of the section is highlighted accordingly and cannot be deleted.
